Good turn-out for Junior Trithalon...

The Jacksons Junior Duathlon at Les Quennevais on Saturday saw another record turnout for Jersey Tristars as the winter duathlon series got underway.

With 40 athletes racing in four categories conditions were perfect for the event which consisted of a run, a cycle and then a second run as a continuous timed event.

The Tristars Start category (under 8) saw a large number of youngsters taking part in their first multisport event. Tackling the 400m run, 1.5km cycle and final 400m run it was Libby Hart who took the overall victory with Lucy Cohu and Saffy Butler battling it out for second and third. Ruairi Boxall was the boys winner with Henry Lucas and Oliver Stocke making encouraging debuts.

In Tristars 1 there was little to choose between Freddie Lucas and Charlie Hart in a see-saw battle in which Lucas finally came out on top. Luke Holmes raced well having just stepped up to this age group to place third. Elizabeth Atkinson cruised to a comfortable victory in the girls’ race ahead of Hannah Worth, both Atkinson and Worth’s achievements were also notable having just made the step up to Tristars 1 also.

The final event saw Tristars 2 and Tristars 3 set off together on a 1500m first run, with the younger athletes cycling 6km compared to the 7.5km course for the older group before both finally finished with an 800m run. Jack Kennedy built a large gap on the first run followed by a group of three including leading girls Adele Maher and Lily McGarry and the leading Tristars 2 competitor Tom Atkinson who entered transition together thirty seconds later.

On the bike Kennedy and Atkinson were both able to consolidate their leads with some fast bike splits and a rapid 800m run to victory. Behind Atkinson in Tristars 2 there was a great battle between Dan Roderick and Liam Cadoret with nothing between them as they entered the final run. Roderick was able to stretch his legs on the final run to take second ahead of Cadoret. Lily Scott was out on her own in Tristars 2 to take the win with Ellie Boustouler in second.

In the Tristars 3 girls race Maher had managed to edge a small gap on McGarry over the course of the five lap cycle but a very strong run from McGarry was enough to overturn the margin and take victory. Harley Cadoret took third in the girls race. Race organisers thanked Jacksons for their continuing commitment to the club and to all of the volunteer marshals and helpers.

Jacksons Junior Triathlon (Race 3)...

Another large turnout of members meant a busy morning of racing in the third Jacksons Junior Triathlon of 2014. Many of the younger competitors were taking part for the first time at a venue last used in 2012 but all coped well with the multi-lap course. 

First out of the choppy sea in the Tristars Start age group was Elizabeth Atkinson followed by Hannah Worth with Luke Holmes and Casper Whitewood close behind. Holmes, recently crowned British Schools Cycling champion, put in his usual fast cycle to catch the leaders entering second transition and put clear space behind him on the run to finish first. A strong run from Worth saw her challenge Atkinson but Atkinson held on to finish first girl and second overall. 

The Tristars 1 age group saw a tight battle from start to finish with Freddie Lucas first out of the swim but only 14 seconds covered Lucas and his competitors Harry Worth, Lily Scott and Tom Atkinson. To add to the excitement Charlie Hart, sixth out of the water, posted the fastest bike split to catch the leading group of 4 who remained almost together coming on the final 1200m run. It was Tom Atkinson who finally made the break on the run to take the victory with Lily Scott securing second place ahead of Lucas and Hart. 

Tristars 2 and 3 started together but with Tristars 3 competing over a longer distance it was leading Tristars 2 competitor Jack Kennedy who exited the water first and consolidated his victory with the fastest cycle and run sections. Will Atkinson and Dan Roderick were 2nd and 3rd out the water, Roderick made up time on the bike section but was unable to do enough to catch Atkinson who held on for second. Aimee Hugh took the win for the girls ahead of Ellie Boustouler. 

With only 2 taking part in the Tristars 3 event there was little competition for Peter Holmes and Adele Maher who completed the 300m swim, 8km cycle and 2.4km run, which was perfect preparation for their trip to Eton next weekend to take part in a major UK junior triathlon event.

Jacksons Falcons Match Report...

Jacksons Falcons continued their 2014 campaign by taking to the field against CPA Global Pirates for the first time of the Summer season. Fielding first, the Falcons started on their back foot, the Pirates loading bases before launching an early attack, and bringing in 4 runs before the Falcons could close them down.

The Falcons ruffled, the Pirates took advantage and closed the innings out without score for the Falcons, with the game looking as though it may go Pirates way, though this was turned on it's head swiftly in the second innings, Falcons tightening up the defences, and preventing the Pirates from bringing home a runner for the next 4 innings.

At bat, the Jacksons squad found their groove and pushed round the runners with a series of base hits, recognising the strengths of their opposition and gradually building a comfortable lead, closing the 5th innings with a 7 run lead.

In the 6th the Pirates staged a resurgence but were cut short by the Falcons, who could sense victory was in reach, going on to extend their lead further with a stellar 6 run innings to push the score to 17 runs to the Pirates 5.

A further close out in the 7th saw the Falcons take the game with a bat to spare. Another great display by the Falcons team, and a fantastic return performance from Nardine Nicolas, a solid glove on 2nd and no sign of her recent knee surgery.

Jacksons Falcons and Jacksons Phoenix win...

Match Reports - 11th May 2014 

The weather was anything but dry, yet the sun was shining on Division 1 Jacksons Falcons and Division 2 Jacksons Phoenix on the first day of the 2014 Jersey Softball season. Both sides notching up wins and getting their campaigns off to the best possible start. Whilst Phoenix had secured the points by forfeit and played out the match as friendly thereafter, Falcons lined up against the Overall Association champions and long undefeated Dominion Niners to fight for their points.

In spite of never having beaten the Niners in any previous meetings, the Jacksons Falcons took to the field in high spirits. Fielding first, the Falcons reaped the rewards of their Winter game-time and training regime, as the Niners opened with a deep drive into right field, which was swiftly retrieved and the run halted at 3rd. The Jacksons Falcons picked up the pace quickly, and in spite of solid hitting from the Niners, were able to cut short runs from all areas of the out-field. Niners managed to bring 4 runs in, with the Falcons then taking three tags to close out the Niners assault.

At bat, the Falcons started somewhat tentatively, but were progressing nicely round the bases, before Falcons Ric Pedro smashed the first of his 2 home runs, evening the Niners tally before the innings close. Niners pulled out a lead of one in the Second innings, with the teams appearing fairly evenly matched, with little in the way of defensive gaps to exploit. By the 3rd, the Falcons had found their groove and shut the Niners down without score, before launching into a spectacular turn at bat, mixing solid base hitting with powerful drives into the out-field and pushing in 11 runs before the Niners could stem the flow, with Paulo dos Reis taking 2 triples, Gary Coleman hitting a triple, and Pedro taking his second home run in a dream innings for the Jacksons side.

With a comfortable lead to defend, the Jacksons Falcons switched to a more defensive play, managing the gap to their opponents in spite of some tremendous strength through the Niners ranks, with dos Reis, Pedro, Robin Tadier, Rochelle Gardiner and Laura Poingdestre taking some important catches to keep the Niners at bay.

Whilst the Niners did begin to close in in the latter stages of the game, the Jacksons side appeared in control and unflustered throughout. Cruising into the7th, the Falcons closed the game in style, taking 3 outs from 4 at bats without score, taking the victory 20 - 14 with a bat in hand. An excellent start to the season.

Jacksons Phoenix Match Report...

Jacksons Phoenix took to the field with enthusiasm in tonight's game against Tigers. Both sides struggling to fill their numbers, Phoenix worked hard to try and adjust to the change in fielding positions, with Flyers Michelle Thomson quickly settling in to the Phoenix line-up. The Jacksons side made a solid start, with the Phoenix gloves showing the improvement of the 3 games the rookie team now have under their belt, and Phoenix prevented the Tigers from stretching a lead. At bat, the teams desire to win worked against them at first, with nervy Phoenix taking a couple of innings to hit their groove. Once they did however, the Phoenix team quickly reeled in the Tigers and the game began to look like it could go either way.

Stellar turns from the Phoenix men provided some memorable moments on the field, with each of Jason Boschat, Jake O'Toole, Mike Quinn and Cameron Ramsay stepping up their game, Boschat and Ramsay also taking a home run each, and Fionnuala Cope continuing her hot streak on the bat for the ladies. Man of the match goes to Alex Kilpatrick however, who was grease lightening for the full hour, taking a number of improbable catches off the bat, and scoring a home run on bases in one of his aggressive base runs. A shaky innings in the final throes saw Tigers seize control, and despite an excellent performance overall by Jacksons Phoenix, Tigers took the victory 70 - 44, though with their closest game to date the Phoenix side continue to edge closer to the first elusive win.
